Honorlock Virtual Proctoring

Before Enabling Honorlock

🔎 Once you decide to use Honorlock, make sure to inform your Chairperson so they can add the class note to the schedule. This note will help students identify Honorlock sections when they register for classes and understand the requirements/expectations of using Honorlock in your course. Check out the FAQ about how to include the class note about virtual proctoring in the schedule.

📌 Remember to install the Honorlock Chrome extension before you begin.

📢 Inform your students that you will be using Honorlock virtual proctoring service through several communication methods (i.e., syllabus, Start Here or Welcome content module, and send an email to all students) before the start of the semester.

📝 Proposed syllabus language to consider:

Honorlock will proctor your exams this semester. Honorlock is an online proctoring service that allows you to take your exam from the comfort of your home. You do not need to create an account, download software, or schedule an appointment in advance. Honorlock is available 24/7, and all you need is a computer, a working webcam, and a stable Internet connection.

To get started, you will need to use Google Chrome and install the Honorlock Chrome browser extension.

When Honorlock is enabled for an exam, you will log into your Falcon Online course, navigate to the Tools link in the course navbar, select Honorlock, and locate your exam. Select the "Launch" button to begin the authentication process, which includes taking a picture of yourself, showing your ID, and selecting the screen to record.

Honorlock will record your exam session via webcam and screen capture. Additionally, Honorlock uses an integrity algorithm that can detect the use of search engines. Do not attempt to search for answers, even on a secondary device.

Using Honorlock with your Falcon Online Quizzes

📌 Remember to install the Honorlock Chrome extension before you begin.

Set Up ⚙️

  1. In the Tools menu, select Honorlock
  2. Select the Enable button for the quiz
  3. Turn on/off the specific proctoring settings you prefer to use
  4. Update the test-taker guidelines to make expectations clear
  5. Assessment visibility should be set to "no" to ensure your quiz dates are enforced
  6. Select Enable to save
    1. Select the Settings button to make any changes

Tips 💡

  • Best practices include creating a Practice Exam with similar settings so students can try out the process in a low-stakes environment and sending an announcement message out about the use of Honorlock in your class.
  • Never give out the password to your exam(s). A password is automatically applied to your quizzes by Honorlock.
  • There are a variety of settings you can apply which may affect the flags generated after a student completes their proctored session.
    • Proctoring Settings - a variety of settings so you can decide the level of proctoring for your use case
      • Browser Guard - flags if there was an attempt to navigate away from the exam and pushes the exam to the front of the screen.
    • Student Guidelines - students will see any settings and instructions provided in this section.
      • Open book, notes allowed, and scratch paper allowed will all prevent flags about students whose face is partially out of view (note: flags are still recorded if they completely leave the webcam view) since these settings anticipate students looking down at permitted resources or working on scratch paper.

Using Honorlock with your Publisher Quizzes

📌 Remember to install the Honorlock Chrome extension before you begin.

Set-Up ⚙️

  1. On the publisher side, set up your exam(s) with a strong password.
    1. Adding extra time is recommended as the exam timer does not stop if a student needs to speak with Honorlock LiveChat.
  2. On the Falcon Online side, go to Honorlock in Tools and use the ellipses in the upper right to register your third-party exam.
    1. Make sure to enter the details exactly as you have them set on the publisher side - name, date/time, password
    2. Provide the name of your publisher in the "Exam Platform" field, as it will appear to students to direct them back to their exam after their initial set-up is complete.
    3. Exam URL/Link is optional. It is recommended to deep-link your publisher exam(s) in your Falcon Online course shell to eliminate additional URL configurations and student confusion.

Tips 💡

  • Never give out the password to your exam(s). A password is automatically applied to your quizzes by Honorlock.
    • A common pitfall for students is returning to the exam page requiring the password, at which point the student needs to click the insert password button via Honorlock.
  • Students have access to Honorlock Live Chat throughout their exam.
  • A good first step to troubleshooting is to review any results recorded in the Honorlock tab of your Falcon Online course shell (Tools - Honorlock) for insight on where the student may have encountered issues.

After Students Complete An Honorlock Exam

Here are a few tips to help when reviewing results:

  • You can right-click the video (webcam and/or screen recording) to show controls. This will give you options such as fullscreen, mute, and navigation. (Note: each video can play independently of each other, so take note of the timestamp for each video.)
  • If you notice a gap where the recording may have lapsed, the student may have experienced a network issue. In this case, a still or "failsafe" image is saved for review. If the connection remains unsteady, images will be saved every 10 seconds. You can access these images by going to the download button on the left to request failsafe images. You will be notified when they are ready for review.
