Introduction

“A slide with the title ‘AMA Style’ next to the DSC Writing Center logo. On the right side, an illustrated older woman with glasses, a bun, a blue cardigan, yellow shirt, and cream skirt is happily posing with one leg lifted. The background resembles a browser window with rounded corners and a bright yellow border.”

AMA stands for the American Medical Association and is a style commonly used in medical publications. While some science and medical courses use APA (American Psychological Association), others may require AMA formatting.

AMA released the 11th edition of their manual in January of 2020. Always check with your instructor to see which edition they would prefer you to use. This guide will address some of the most common elements of the 11th edition. For more in-depth help with AMA formatting, consider setting an appointment with a tutor at the Daytona State Writing Center by calling (386)506-3297 or by coming to the writing center in-person. You can also schedule appointments through email or the live-chat feature on our website.

This video from The University of Houston provides an overview of the AMA style.
