Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Maturity

Emotional intelligence is a set of interpersonal skills that contribute to your ability to communicate effectively and maintain respectful and meaningful relationships. It is made up of a few different abilities:

  • emotional awareness, or the ability to identify and name one’s own emotions;
  • the ability to harness those emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving;
  • the ability to manage emotions, which includes both regulating one’s own emotions when necessary and helping others to do the same.

Emotionally intelligent individuals are both highly conscious of his or her own reactions and emotional states and able to identify and manage them. They are also able to recognize appropriately react to others as they react or display a variety of emotional states. This sensitivity and empathy aids one in managing their own emotional well being and their reactions to their social environment. Fortunately, one can always work on becoming more emotionally intelligent. It takes self-awareness and the commitment to learning about communication, the nature of relationships and potentially shifting your beliefs.
