Faculty Senate

Professor Emeritus Designation

Professor Emeritus Designation

The purpose of the Professor Emeritus/Emerita title is to recognize retired faculty for meritorious service to students and the College.  This award is reserved for retired faculty who have had distinguished careers and made significant contributions to Daytona State College.  Achieving the status of Professor Emeritus is to be viewed as the highest honor that the College may bestow upon a faculty member.

Eligibility

Emeritus status can be awarded to a former professor of Daytona State College who:

  1. Has retired from the College service as a member of the full-time teaching faculty.
  2. Must be (or has been) a full-time faculty employee holding the faculty rank of Full Professor or higher and have at least 15 years of service.
  3. Has made meritorious and significant contributions to the College in their areas of teaching, service to the College, service to the community, and service to the profession during his or her career.
  4. Is nominated within three years of the date of his or her retirement from the College or his or her death.

Honors

The following honors may be included with the appointment to Professor Emeritus status:

  1. Listing in the faculty and staff section of the Daytona State College Catalog, with identification as Professor Emeritus.
  2. The option to participate in the academic processions at commencement exercises and other such official College events, marching at the head of the faculty and named in the commencement program.
  3. Based on recommendations of Department Chair, AVP, and President, Emeritus faculty will have the opportunity to select Volunteer Status at the College in order to support educational/research endeavors.

Procedure for Nominations

  1. Each year, before the month of October, the Faculty Senate will be given a list of members in their area who have become eligible.
  2. Faculty Senate’s Awards Committee will take nominations from faculty based on the eligibility list.  The nominators will provide the name(s) of the nominees and supportive evidence of the appropriate criteria as defined above.  Nomination form will include a candidate’s whole career, using the Faculty Activity Report and other material as documentation.
  3. Before the last meeting of the Fall term, the Faculty Senate will vote on the nominations.  The Senate will then send its recommendations to the Provost who will present the recommendations to the President of the College.
  4. Starting in 2023, the Professor Emeritus nomination process will be finalized in April for Spring Awards Ceremony (Convocation). Previously, Professor Emeritus designation was presented during Fall Planning with the other Faculty Senate awards.
