Writing Center Services

One-on-One In-Person & Virtual Tutoring

Writing Center appointments help writers achieve their goals for any type of writing or communication project. Appointments last 45-minutes and can be scheduled 3 times per week. Virtual appointments use screen sharing via MS Teams.

Tutoring Services

One-on-One Tutoring

Daytona State College students, staff, and faculty are eligible for our services and can book a 45-minute appointment with a Writing Center staff member. As tutors, we work with patrons on all phases of writing and create strategies for more effective communication.

An individual can have up to one appointment per day and up to three appointments per week. We allow a limited number of walk-ins per day, but because they are on a first-come, first-serve basis, we encourage writers to book an appointment ahead of time to ensure availability.

To book an appointment, you may either chat with us, send us an email, or give us a call at (386) 506-3297. We respond during operating hours.

The Writing Center cannot provide an estimate of your grade.

We cannot give predictions as to what grade a student will receive on a project, but instead focus on strengthening its content and structure. Students can speak directly to their instructor with any questions about grades or assignment assessments.

Virtual Appointments

Daytona State College offers a wide variety of online and hybrid classes. For students taking these classes, the DSC Writing Center offers virtual tutoring consultations delivered through the web conferencing software Microsoft Teams (MS Teams). Students will need to have an electronic copy of any assignment prompt or piece of writing they want to work on for that appointment.

Virtual sessions last 45 minutes and will be initiated through an emailed Microsoft Teams invitation. The invitation will be sent to the student after a consultation is booked and prior to the appointment's scheduled starting time. Students should take some time to make sure their microphone and speakers and/or headphones are working prior to their appointment time.

Because virtual appointments are designed to be as close to in-person sessions as possible, we do not do email suggestions, comments, or sessions. We are not an editing service and do not accept emailed paper submissions. As with all tutoring, we want students to be part of the process.

The Writing Center is not a drop-off or email service for student work.

Our goal as tutors is to discuss writing concerns and revisions so writers leave the consultation with their own techniques for developing future projects. Because of this, we do not accept emails or requests to review, edit, and return assignments.

Test Prep Sessions

The Writing Center offers one-on-one, 45-minute appointments for students seeking help with test prep.

We can help with many kind of tests, but we specialize in:

  •  The ATI TEAS Reading and English sections
  • The FTCE GKT Essay and Reading sections.

Students may schedule up to three appointments each week. Students' individual strengths and weaknesses are examined and a study plan is devised. Since sessions are tailored to the individual needs of the learner, they may cover multiple content areas in one session.

What can you expect in a test prep session?

  • TEAS Reading and English and GKT Reading: Students can expect to work one-on-one with a tutor to evaluate what areas the student could focus on improving. A unique plan will then be developed for the student to approach these improvements in on-going sessions with the Writing Center.

  • GKT Essay: Students may complete a practice essay session by scheduling an appointment with the Writing Center. Students will be given a sample prompt in a test-like environment. Following their timed writing session, they can schedule a follow-up appointment with the Writing Center to discuss their essay.

How can you schedule a test prep session?

Appointments can be scheduled through the chat, by emailing CWC@DaytonaState.edu, or calling 386.506.3297 during open business hours. If you would like a recurring test prep schedule, please specify during your call or email.

How We Help Faculty

Though Daytona State College faculty can use any of the student services offered at the DSC Writing Center, we also encourage them to engage in the instructional resources that we offer:
  • Embed a Writing Specialist in your course
  • Request a workshop
  • Add the Writing Center chat widget to your course shell homepage by following these video instructions
  • Use our citation styles and writing strategies InfoGuides.
  • Explore our WAC/WID professional development program to integrate critical thinking, active learning, and writing within any academic discipline.

Furthermore, any faculty interested in integrating the Writing Center services with their work at DSC can make an appointment to work on any writing, class material, or non-sensitive documents.

The best way for both instructor and students to learn about the Writing Center is to host an Introduction Workshop. Send us an "Intro" request or visit us in person to learn more. We also recommend including a blurb about the Writing Center on the course syllabus to familiarize students with our services. We hope faculty will engage students in collaboration with the Writing Center services by recommending meeting with a tutor early in the writing process and scheduling appointments for subsequent revision.

Any faculty support goes a long way in serving the entire DSC community. We encourage and appreciate referrals to the Writing Center, but ask that consultations with us not be mandatory. If any faculty needs to verify a student visit to the Writing Center, please email us at CWC@daytonastate.edu. We also welcome faculty referrals for student peer tutors who are not just strong writers, but ones that also have a desire to help others and are curious to expand their own skill set.

Typical Appointment Expectations

Typically, an appointment will include:

 Review:

Coming prepared is essential. Consultations are most productive when students bring in prompts or research pertaining to their project, so tutors will have an understanding of the purpose of the assignment. Students will get the most out of a consultation if they proactively participate in the session with questions and concerns.

  Discussion:

It can be intimidating to discuss personal strengths and weaknesses in communication skills. Because the nature of our consultations promotes collaboration, open discussion, and constructive feedback, students will leave the Writing Center feeling more confident in their skillset and their ability to talk about it.

  Strategies:

We will work with writers on setting an agenda for the consultation. A student may come in with the intent of discussing grammar and mechanics, and in the process of discussing those concerns, a tutor may suggest other areas of focus during the appointment. At the end of the session, we find it important to review strategies and goals established during that time and apply them to current and future projects.
