Quotes from Notable People About Libraries

"Libraries have always seemed like the richest places in the world to me, and I've done some of my best learning and thinking thanks to them.  Libraries and librarians have definitely changed my life and the lives of countless other Americans."  -- Barbara Bush, former First Lady of the United States

"Someone who sees the library for what it is--a vital and multifaceted part of the community--will realize that it will not and cannot be replaced by electronics."  -- Walter Crawford and Michael Gorman in The Annual Report of the Curtis Memorial LIbrary, Brunswick, ME

“Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.” Neil Gaiman, author

Thank a Library Worker or Volunteer

During National Library Week, celebrate your libraries, librarians, and other library staff.

  • Visit your local public library and thank the people at the circulation desk for providing materials.
  • Visit a school library and ask if it accepts donations of gently used children's books.
  • Visit an academic library and thank the library staff for teaching students to become independent researchers.
  • Visit the medical library at your local hospital and thank the staff for providing health-related information for patients and their families.
