Increasing Student Engagement with H5P

Online student retention is a concern for all of us in higher education. We’ve been inundated with a barrage of information telling us what works/what doesn’t, and what we should be doing/what we shouldn’t be doing. One thing that is consistently mentioned in all that information is that we need to increase student engagement. This, in turn, can help students achieve success and aid in class completion. While we may be overwhelmed with all the information out there, addressing student engagement does not have to be that way. The Faculty Innovation Center (FIC) is here to help you with that!

What exactly is H5P?

H5P is a technology that allows users to create rich content that can be shared with colleagues and departments. Users may create and edit interactive videos, presentations, games, simulations and more. In addition, it is responsive and mobile friendly so your students can access it on computers, smart phones, and tablets. The FIC will be offering several mini trainings on H5P components. On February 8, at 1 pm in the FIC training lab (Building 200, room 204), we will be offering a workshop on how to do an interactive video using H5P. What can you add to an interactive video?

  • Multiple choice questions with one or more correct answers
  • Fill in the blank questions
  • Drag and drop questions Interactive summaries
  • Single choice question sets
  • Mark the word activities
  • Drag and drop text Images
  • Tables
  • Labels
  • Text
  • Links

Before you attend the training, please choose a video from YouTube that you think would be beneficial in your class or upload a video that you want to use to YouTube. Note the time stamps of where you want to insert items.

Here is an example of an interactive video used in a speech class. It was created for Amy Brackel's speech communication class as part of her involvement in the Faculty Fellowship program.

This video is from a speech given by Deborah Frances-White | TEDxCambridgeUniversity

H5P increases substantive interactions and student engagement by adding interactivity to your online and hybrid classes. It is fully integrated into Falcon Online and anyone can use it. You can access it in your practice course by creating a new file in content and clicking on the Insert Stuff icon. Scroll down the dropdown menu and select H5P. You can view examples on the H5P site. We are very excited about these upcoming workshops and hope to see you there. You may attend via Teams also. For more information, call Lisa Lute at ext. 4277 or stop by the FIC! You may register for this event on Learning Stream.
