As we conclude the Fall 2024 semester, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our journey together and remind you of some key takeaways.
Throughout our courses, we have emphasized the critical role of motivation in student learning. Our goal has been to foster enthusiasm in our students, helping them develop a sustained motivation to learn through their cumulative experiences. As you continue your teaching journey, remember effective strategies keep your students motivated, including highlighting how your course content connects to students’ academic and career aspirations. We have also learned about interactions to facilitate opportunities for student interaction and relationship building and using varied assessment and presentation methods, while explaining their purposes. One of the most important opportunities to serve our students is the aspect of support. Our belief in students’ abilities and our commitment to supporting their learning can mean the difference between success and failure.
Think back to our discussions on the importance of clear directions and explanations. Providing high-quality instructions for complex tasks and clear explanations of challenging content is essential for all courses. Remember to seek student feedback on the clarity of your directions to make necessary instructional adjustments. We also explored the use of concept maps and other visual tools to help students connect key concepts of the courses, including the importance of helping students build connections between ideas. Part of our role is encouraging your students to create and use visual tools to enhance their understanding and critical thinking skills.
We also focused on the importance of modeling how to receive and use feedback. Some of the implementation practices we learned included Stop-Start-Continue questions to gather student feedback and make real-time adjustments to your teaching methods. We learned how this shows your investment in their learning and helps improve their educational experiences.
At the end of the courses, we discussed the development of self-directed learners and the value of fostering a lifelong learning mindset in your students. We learned simple practices like sharing project flowcharts and using cognitive wrappers can help students manage their time and reflect on their learning processes.
ACUE courses are designed to enhance our teaching practices and support our professional development. For those of you who have taken these courses, your experiences and insights are invaluable. Please share your experiences with colleagues about ACUE courses and how they have impacted your teaching.
