Upcoming Changes to Falcon Online Notifications

As part of our D2L's ongoing efforts to enhance the user experience, we would like to inform you of a change in the notification system. Starting July 2024, Falcon Online will no longer be supporting text messaging for notifications. The ability to add a mobile phone number and subscribe to SMS notifications in Falcon Online is going to be removed. Any mobile phone numbers in Falcon Online will be removed at that time.

Recommendations

To ensure that you continue to receive important updates and information, we recommend you select the instant notifications that you would like to receive by selecting the Email checkbox. Alternatively, you can opt to download the Pulse app, which offers a seamless and efficient way to stay informed about your courses and activities. This will be the recommended method of receiving notifications moving forward.

Winter Break has come and gone, the New Year’s confetti has been swept away, and we’re in the thick of our Spring Semester. I don’t know about you, but I always get the urge to clean, organize, and refresh things during this time of year. If you’re feeling that way too, and you’re looking for a way to freshen up your course materials and teaching strategies, then I’ve got a solution for you!

For many of us, it’s been a while since we completed the UDL and Accessibility course from the Online Faculty Training Series. In the meantime, education and technology have continued to evolve and progress. Don’t let your courses get stagnant! The UDL Spring Refresh is designed to meet your needs and offer you choices that work for your interests, schedule, and geographical location. The Chase in H5P is a streamlined and engaging way to present H5P questions. It is quite versatile and allows you to create more learning scenarios with three distinct modes. In the Chase mode, learners go through all the content as fast as possible, and solutions are explained at the end. In Page-by-Page mode, learners go through one page at a time and solutions are explained per page (similar to, for instance, Kahoot). In Self Pace mode, learners go through all the content at their own time and get to see a leaderboard at the end.

Want to Design Your Own?

  • First go to your H5P account, either through your class shell or by using your Daytona State credentials at H5P.com
  • Click on the Add Content button on the top left of the page. 
  • Search or scroll to find The Chase in the list of H5P types.
  • You can click the details to read about The Chase and view sample pages.
  • When you are ready, select Use to open edit mode and start adding your questions.

Title and Description

The first thing you will do is create your title and task description. Enter a title, this will be used for locating and reporting for your H5P.
Then enter a description; this will be displayed on the Chase when students access it.

 

Your First Question

You will create a number of pages for your students to progress through, with one or more content items (text, images, video or questions) per page.

On the first page:

  1. Enter a timer (for Page by Page mode): allow students to process each page within a set time (default is 2). We have found that 30 seconds is usually enough when using page-by-page mode. See the game modes section further down in this post for more details.
  2. Select a content item from the dropdown list.

The types of content you can add are as follows:

  • Display content: Text, image, accordion, image slider, video and image hotspot.
  • Questions: multiple choice, drag and drop, drag the words, fill in the blanks, mark the words and true/false questions.

Note: Drag and drop, drag the words and image hotspot may not work so well on mobile view.

You can now create your first question. To add additional content (text, image and video) or questions on the same page, select Add Content, and follow the content item instructions.

To move ahead to a new page, select Add Page, then repeat the same steps above.

Customizing The Chase

If you wish to customize The Chase, you can review the general settings after you create your questions. The Chase allows you to:

  • Enable music
  • Choose a color theme 

Previewing Your Game

We strongly recommend that you do a practice run before hosting your Chase activity using the Side-by-side Preview mode. In this view, you can review your creation and practice presenting your chase.

Game Modes

You can choose from three game modes.

  • The Chase - This is also known as the classic mode. It requires students to complete all the questions at once. The winner will be the fastest student with the most points accrued. You can set your own time for the activity; five minutes is the default.
  • Page-by-page - this mode will pause after each question. This way the question and answer(s) can be reviewed by the learners, making this a great way to review important material. You can also choose to set a manual timer for each page or allow the default of two minutes to remain. 
  • Self-Paced - you may choose to make this a practice activity with unlimited attempts for students to review materials at their own pace.

 

Hosting Your Game

As the presenter, wait for all your participants to enter the game. You can tell how many have entered by watching the number of players increase. While waiting, select a game modeToggle on/off to display the Chase in full screen. When ready, click Start Game

Game modes

During the game, click on the (...) button to expand more in-game options, including allow retry, reset, end the game or show results on participant's screens. See screenshot below.

At the end of game, you can switch between the winner's podium and summary view. The Summary view will give you a result overview of each question and percentage of correct and incorrect selections. You can see these choices in the screenshot below, located between the time and the number of players.

How to Create and Enable a Game Code

Participants will need a game code to access The Chase. The game code is a unique seven-digit code that allows people to access an H5p activity directly from their computer or mobile devices, without signing in or accessing Falcon Online. Any H5P activity, by default, is set as Protected and only available to the owner and any collaborators. To enable a game code, you must change the default setting to Public. 

While in editing mode, scroll down to the bottom of the activity. Click on Publish and then click on Public.

Where is the Game Code?

You can find the game code located within the game settings once you have created your activity. IMPORTANT -You will need to open or create the activity on the H5P.com site to see the game code. 

NOTE - You would need to have the owner or H5P collaborator access to see the game code. If you cannot locate the game code, or don't have access to your teaching H5P activities, contact the activity owner to grant access.

Students can access the activity by going to go.h5p.com and entering the game code in the game code field and hitting Enter.
