Turnitin is an integrated feature in Falcon Online that you can enable to annotate and compare student papers to an online database of original content in a single location. Each student submission can generate a report to access the Feedback Studio, which has two primary layers: the Grading layer and the Similarity layer. There is a third layer, the grammar tools layer, but we know you do not need assistance with grammatical issues, and you can address them with the QuickMarks tool in the Grading layer. The Similarity layer identifies matching content and the source of the material within the student paper. The Grading layer provides you with tools for markup and written and audio feedback. Let us discuss some features, properties, and benefits of using Turnitin. I have included videos that are specific to DSC from Turnitin.
First, you need to enable Turnitin in your submission folder. The following video is an instruction to enable Turnitin on your Assignment submission folder. You can easily access the Feedback Studio from the submission folder by opening the originality report.
The Grading layer has three tools: QuickMarks, Feedback Summary, and Rubric/Form. We highly recommend that you use rubrics within Falcon Online, however, and not within the Feedback Studio to assess the submissions. There are some quirks with the rubrics in the Feedback Studio as it relates to transferring a numeric score back into your course. If you are going to use a rubric, please attach it to your assignment submission folder. The following video provides instruction on QuickMark in the Feedback Studio.
The Similarity layer has four tools: Match Overview, All Sources, Filters and Settings, and Excluded sources. The Match Overview identifies the sources, and All Sources breaks down the similarity index into individual sources. Therefore, if you have multiple matches from the same sources, you can view individual matches in the All Sources tool. You can exclude sources from the All Sources tool, and you can see the exclusions from the Excluded Sources tool. Filters and Settings provide you with additional options to filter similarities like quotes and sources less than a specific number of words.
The Feedback Studio has a third layer, grammar tools, that you have to enable from the ‘More Options in Turnitin’ button within the Turnitin tab in your submission folder. The optional settings are worth checking out because they can narrow the focus of your originality report.
