Managing Your Success

Checking Your Grades in Falcon Online

Keep Up Throughout The Semester

You will want to check your grades regularly in Falcon Online using GRADES in the navigation bar to assess your status in the class, check that grades posted are accurate and to determine if any grades are missing. You will also want to take time to read feedback left by your instructors.  This feedback may include comments, rubrics, audio feedback or document annotations.

There are video demonstrations and more information about how to check your grades and feedback on the Falcon Online InfoGuide

Grade Update Notifications

You can even set up notifications using the PULSE app to alert you that a grade has been updated so you don't need to keep logging in to check.  You can learn more about the PULSE app on the Falcon Online InfoGuide

Calcuating Your GPA

To calculate your grade point average, first multiply the number of credits each class is worth by the point value for the letter grade that you earned in that class. Next, total the grade points of all of your classes for that semester and divide it by the number of credit hours that you attempted. This is your semester GPA.

This is an example of a semester schedule, grades earned and how to calculate the semester GPA.

  • To estimate your GPA for your current classes, use this College GPA Calculator. Plug in your current classes, their credit hour values and the estimated grade (or your current grade if you want to know your current GPA).
  • If you have more than one semester of classes, you will want to understand how to calculate your cumulative GPA. You can use the same College GPA Calculator, but you will add in additional semester information to get the cumulative GPA versus the semester GPA.
  • Use this Improve Your GPA Calculator to determine the grades and number of credits you would need to increase your GPA.

Calculated Your Grades - For a Specific Class

Straight Percentage Course Grade Calculations/Calculating Grades from Straight Points

Straight averages are calculated using points or percentages for assignments in the current grading period by adding the total earned and dividing by the total possible.

Example 1:

If you earn assignment points of 95/100, 93/100, 98/100, 88/100, 83/100, and 74/100, the average is calculated as follows:

(95+93+98+88+83+74) / 600 = 88.5%

Example 2:

Add up the point values of all of your graded assignments. For instance, you may have completed four assignments worth the following numbers of points: 10, 20, 20 and 30. If you add them up, you find that the assignments were worth a total of 80 points.

Add up scores that you earned on each assignment. For example, suppose that on the assignments from the previous step, you earned the following scores: 7, 19, 14 and 23 points. If you add them up, you get a total of 63 points.

Divide the total number of points you earned by the total point value of all the assignments, and then multiply the number by 100 percent. For example:

Calculating points gpa - percentage of points earned = 63 over 80 times 100% which equals 79%

Compare your percentage to the grading scale to find your letter grade. This is the typical 'straight points' grading scale (some courses/instructors give + and - grades within each range.

  • A - 90 to 100 percent
  • B - 80 to 89 percent
  • C - 70 to 79 percent
  • D - 60 to 69 percent
  • F - less than 60 percent

Because you earned 79 percent of your points, you earned a "C."

This Points Based Assignments Grade Calculator can help you figure out your points based grade.

The Ohio State GPA Calculator is also very easy to use and follow and helps you project grades as well.

Weighted Course Grade Calculations

Weighted averages by assignment type are calculated by creating a straight average, as explained previously, for each assignment type used in the class, and then an overall average is calculated by averaging those together based on the weight of each assignment type. For example, if the teacher uses Test, Quiz, and Homework types that are weighted 50%, 30%, and 20% respectively, there is a calculated average for each of the three types using the points/percentage straight average and then an overall average using the weights for each type.

Building on this example, if the student’s averages for each type are 75 for Test, 85 for Quiz, and 95 for Homework, the overall average is calculated as follows:

[(75*50) + (85*30) + (95*20)] / (50+30+20) = 82.00%

Alternatively, if the teacher does not give any Quiz assignments during the grading period, and the student earned 75 for Test and 95 for Homework, the overall average is calculated as follows:

[(75*50) + (95*20)] / (50+20) = 80.71%

Using a grade calculator makes determining weighted grades much easier. Here are some options.

Important Grade Information

Grading System and Calculating Your GPA

Daytona State College uses these values.

Letter grades used to calculate GPA:

Grade Definition Grade Point Value
A = Excellent 4.0
B+ = Very Good 3.5
B = Good 3.0
C+ = High Average 2.5
C = Average 2.0
D+ = Below Average 1.5
D = Poor 1.0
F = Failure 0.0
FN = Failure 0.0 (non-attendance prior to withdrawal date)

Grades not used to calculate GPA:

"I"- Incomplete - The incomplete grade is a temporary grade issued only when a student who is passing the course but who, for valid and unforeseen reasons, is not able to complete the course requirements by the end of the class end date. The student agrees with the instructor to complete the requirements of the course no later than 45 days after the end of the term during which the class was taken. Deadlines for each term are published on the Academic Calendar. "I" grades automatically convert to "F" grades if the requirements are not met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the instructor of record by the deadline published in the academic college calendar.

"IP" - In Progress - The class is currently in session and has not ended.

"W" - Withdrawal - Grade issued when a student officially withdraws from a class.

"W1" – Administrative Withdrawal – Grade issued when the student is administratively withdrawn for non-attendance based on faculty submission of attendance roster 2. (first issued Spring 2017). The last date of attendance will be noted and a student who receives the “W1” grade for all classes will be subject to the federal Title IV refund guidelines. For more information about the refund that will be required, please see the Financial Aid section of this catalog.

“W19” – Administrative Withdrawal COVID – Grade issued when student is administratively withdrawn under COVID appeal. (issued Spring 2020)

“AM” – Second Chance Program grade amnesty applied.

"SP" - Completion - Issued only for college preparatory courses and/or vocational courses, and selected college credit classes, when a student completes all course work but has not mastered the skill associated with the course. Example: A typing course requires the minimum skill of 45 words per minute and the student only masters 40 words per minute. No credit is awarded. Student must register and repeat the course.

“S” – Satisfactory Progress - Topics discussed and required learning has been accomplished.

"NR" – Grades Not Reported - The Records Office may issue this grade when an instructor has not submitted a grade.

"X" - Audit - Issued when a student does not want credit for a particular course and officially audits the course by the deadline for the semester (published in the academic calendar).

"CR" - Credit Only - Issued for alternate methods of earning credit such as Advance Placement, IB, etc.

"NC" - No Credit - Issued for zero credit courses.

"CN" - Continuing Credit - Issued for open exit courses that cross semesters.

“P/F” -  Pass/Fail Grade -  Grade of Pass or Fail issued for required program courses that have met learning expectations.
