ACUE Microcredentials

Four microcredentials (offered over an academic year) prepare faculty with evidence-based teaching practices proven to increase student achievement and close equity gaps. The courses are also in alignment with our mission to: emphasize student success, embrace excellence, and foster innovation to enhance teaching and learning.

ACUE courses feature digital badging providing an easy way to document a commitment to instructional excellence. Badges can be added to your curriculum vitae, used in online teaching portfolios, and displayed on LinkedIn profiles or web pages as a sign of your achievement.

Structure of the Training

Modules (25 in total) are combined into four micro-credential courses. Once all four are completed, participants will earn a Certificate in Effective {Online} College Instruction. Most of these different micro-credentials are either focused on the face-to-face classroom or virtual learning environments. The four courses are:

  • Promoting Active Learning
  • Creating a Productive Learning Environment
  • Inspiring Inquiry and Preparing Lifelong Learning
  • Designing Learner-Centered Courses

Modality

The course will make extensive use of an online platform for the delivery of content and is presented asynchronously. During the course, faculty will think about their course, attempt to implement new or expanded skills, and reflect on the effectiveness of those changes. ACUE estimates faculty will spend 2-3 hours per week on coursework.

Faculty Fellow in Teaching & Learning

Faculty Fellows in Teaching & Learning is a professional development opportunity and faculty designation that would complement the offering of the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Effective Teaching Practices training. The Faculty Fellow in Teaching & Learning would provide faculty with peer mentorship through applying and adopting the ACUE teaching and learning principles in the face-to-face and virtual classroom to better support students' academic success. The Faculty Fellow in Teaching and Learning will work and collaborate with peer faculty members, ACUE facilitators, instructional designers, and other staff members within the Division of Online Studies. This is a two-semester commitment in which the full-time faculty member agrees to spend three hours per week working in the Faculty Innovation Center and/or meet remotely to mentor and train peer faculty while creating teaching resources and participating in teaching & learning events on campus.

Elevate Your Exposure with Digital Badges: Unlocking a World of Professional Development Opportunities

In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, professional development for faculty members has never been more critical. The emergence of digital badges to recognize and highlight learning offers a multitude of benefits for educators. These digital credentials display a verifiable and tangible way to show a wide range of skills, achievements, and competencies gained through continuous learning. With their online and easily shareable nature, professional digital badges enable faculty members to enhance their credibility and visibility within their institutions and the broader educational community. These badges not only acknowledge individual accomplishments but also empower educators to engage in personalized, self-directed learning pathways, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and innovation. With professional digital badges, faculty members can effectively communicate their abilities, stay current with educational trends, and contribute to the advancement of teaching and learning practices.

Florida Instructional Designer Network

The Florida Instructional Designer Network (FLIDN), which our very own Dr. Cheryl Kohen is an Advisory Committee member, recently hosted the ‘2023 Summer on ChatGPT and Generative AI in Education Jamboree' online seminar series that awarded participants and presenters with the Professional Development Digital Badge and Award by attending the sessions and meeting the criteria. The presentations and materials were informative and thought provoking for this recent technology. If you would like to get an idea of an FLIDN professional development session before Fall Planning and the beginning of the new semester, the Summer Jamboree concludes with the Capstone Panel Session on Tuesday, August 15th at 2PM. There is a limit on the number of participants, so the capstone may be full.

I have taken part in many of their sessions because these topics apply to best practices in instructional design, and teaching and learning, and, of course, we can “wear” our badges proudly on social media platforms. There is diversity of disciplines and a depth of knowledge among the presenters and participants. The presenters represent institutions from the Florida College System, State University System, Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, and beyond the state.

I am touting the FLIDN because the members of this community reflect the attributes and commitment to higher education that I see daily from our faculty members and staff at DSC. It is inspirational and worth bringing to your attention. The resources, positivity, and selflessness are unmatched within the membership. (Yes, I am a member and that is more of an observation about the members than it is a humble brag). Fortunately, the FLIDN is open and free to become a member. You only need to subscribe to the FLIDN listserv to join our community of practice. I recommend joining this community for the wonderful resources, connections, and professional development opportunities.

I mentioned how informative and thought provoking the 2023 Summer Jamboree was, so I am including links to the recorded sessions and presentation materials.
