Falcon Online SP23 course shells will be published December 3rd, 2022.
Around this time of the semester, we often get inquiries regarding course shell availability for students and faculty. Friendly reminder that Falcon Online shells are generated 45 days prior to the start of the following semester. During this period, instructors are enrolled into their specific course shells. If a course shell is not visible, the department has not released it in the schedule for open enrollment or it may be a limited access course.
Student enrollments begin 45 days prior to the start of the semester, students can see their courses, but cannot access the course until the first day of the semester start date. All students can access the Falcon Online home page that has announcements for students and faculty. If you wish to contact your students before classes begin, you can use the Falcon Online course shell to send an email to your class list welcoming students and providing any housekeeping updates such as information about course materials or initial assignments.
The Falcon Online enrollments are updated daily at 7:30 am, 2:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 2:30 am. As always, if you have questions, feel free to contact the Faculty Innovation Center at 386-506-3485 or FIC@daytonastate.edu. Thanks!
All are welcome! For the second time, our Faculty Fellows in Teaching & Learning, Dr. Margie Hensler and Dr. Michael Mallott, will be hosting Snack & Share sessions at both the Daytona Beach and DeLand campuses. Join us for a discussion on what the fellows and other ACUE cohort faculty members have been learning in the current Designing Learner-Centered and Equitable Courses micro-credential and teaching practices they've already applied. These Snack & Share sessions are open to all faculty either in person or via Teams. This program is connected to our Faculty Innovation Center (FIC) on the Go Schedule. If you're on the Daytona or DeLand campus these days and times, please join us, or use the Teams links below and join us virtually!
Daytona State College full-time and part-time faculty members may now register for Spring and Summer 2023 ACUE cohorts. As we announced earlier this semester, DSC faculty members have the opportunity to engage in an evidence-based nationally recognized graduate-level teaching certification and the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE). This teacher certification is comprised of four micro-credentials (offered over the course of an academic year) to prepare faculty with evidence-based teaching practices proven to increase student achievement and close equity gaps.
Enroll by 12/8/2022
Enroll today! All full-time and part-time faculty will be eligible but there is a limit to the number of participants. You can (and are encouraged to) sign up for more than one course. To enroll in the January 2023 cohort, faculty must register by Thursday, December 8th, 2022.

Modality
All cohorts offered through ACUE are fully online and asynchronous. During the course, faculty will think about their own course, attempt to implement new or expanded skills, and reflect on the effectiveness of those changes. ACUE estimates faculty will spend 2-3 hours per week on coursework.
Structure of the Training
Modules (25 in total) are combined into four micro-credential courses. Once all four are completed, you will earn your Certificate in Effective [Online] College Instruction. Most of these different micro-credentials are either focused on the face-to-face classroom or virtual learning environments, but all content is provided fully online asynchronously. The four courses include:
Promoting Active Learning
Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environment
Inspiring Inquiry and Preparing Lifelong Learning
Designing Student-Centered Courses

Regular and substantive interaction (RSI) has been around for quite some time but let's take a moment to brush up on the basics. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) outlines rules that affect programs like federal financial aid under Title IV - under Title 34, Education, Part 600, Institutional Eligibility Under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as Amended. Specifically, the definition for distance education is where requirements regarding RSI reside (34 C.F.R. § 600.2). Previously, the guidance was simply "to support regular and substantive interaction." As of July 1, 2021, the federal regulation now clarifies what is expected for each requirement - including regular and substantive interaction. Our current training has done a great job estimating the expectations from the beginning, but the redesigned RSI training course will offer updated content aligned with the new details about what defines regular and substantive. For instance, the new content includes video testimonials from DSC faculty sharing tried & true tips for accomplishing these federal expectations in your courses. Take a look at the video below, taken directly from the new course, that quickly walks you through the federal regulation for elements most relevant to your teaching practices.
Is Training in Your Future?
All DSC faculty are required to complete RSI training. New faculty members will complete this training starting later this Fall. Existing faculty members who have already successfully completed RSI are not required to retake the training. This blog series will include many videos from the new training and registration is open any time you are interested in experiencing the new content - written insights, interactive H5P activities, and a community discussion area to bounce ideas around with your DSC network of peers.
Coming Soon: RSI Trailer
Several faculty who have completed and practiced RSI are featured in the new and improved training to share practical examples you can try in your course right away. Curious about what's to come in this new training? Check out this course refresh trailer!

Hello! My name is Lisa Lute, and I am the new instructional designer with the Division of Online Studies at Daytona State College (DSC). Before my time at DSC, I was a high school English and creative writing teacher for almost twenty years. I became interested in online learning many years ago and earned a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction – Technology from Grand Canyon University. After that, I accepted a job with Volusia Online Learning where I discovered I loved building and maintaining online courses.
When I’m not on a computer, I spend a lot of time reading, listening to music, watching movies and TV series, cooking, and hanging out with my friends. My current project is learning Portuguese. I am excited to be here and look forward to meeting all of you. If I can assist you in any way, please reach out to me.
Awards for Excellence in Online & Hybrid Instruction
Calling all faculty! We're now accepting applications to nominate your peers to receive an award for excellence in online and hybrid instruction! Please take a few minutes and submit one or both of the Microsoft Form links below. All nominations are due Monday, November 28th, 2022.
Both awards will recognize an outstanding Daytona State College instructor who has utilized a well-designed course shell, capitalizing on the modality the course is taught within. This course should provide engaging and creative course materials for their learners and serve as a model of instructional excellence in either the hybrid or online modalities. Visit our Resources page on the Online Studies webpages to learn more about these awards and past recipients.
We're so grateful to our faculty and the amazing work they've accomplished these past couple of years despite many obstacles. Thank you for your service to our students, each other, and our college. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to me.
