ACUE Current & Future Cohorts, InfoSession, and Snack & Share with Faculty Fellows!acue effective college instruction badge

As we announced during the Fall 2022 planning week, Daytona State College is offering our full-time and part-time faculty members the opportunity to engage in an evidence-based nationally recognized graduate-level teaching certification and the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE). This teacher certification is comprised of four microcredentials (offered over the course of an academic year) to prepare faculty with evidence-based teaching practices proven to increase student achievement and close equity gaps. ACUE courses feature digital badging providing an easy way to document a commitment to instructional excellence. Badges can be added to your curriculum vitae, used in online teaching portfolios, and displayed on LinkedIn profiles or web pages as a sign of your achievement. During the course, faculty will think about their own course, attempt to implement new or expanded skills, and reflect on the effectiveness of those changes. ACUE estimates faculty will spend 2-3 hours per week on coursework.

Faculty Fellowship in Innovation for 2022-2023

It is an honor for the Division of Online Studies to host a faculty member each semester for the Faculty Fellowship in Innovation. In our fellowship, we strive to:

  • develop online pedagogy and implement best practices;
  • increase student success;
  • increase student engagement;
  • innovate.

We begin by asking our fellows to identify course-specific goals, which become our guide, for the semester-long fellowship. As we meet throughout the semester, we explore the means to achieve these objectives, and we often find other enhancements to complement the goals.

Dr. Cheryl Kohen has given me with the opportunity to lead this fellowship. I would like to recognize the past Faculty Fellows in Innovation for your feedback that has improved our processes, documentation, and communication standards. Without further ado, please allow me to introduce you to our Faculty Fellows in Innovation for the 2022-23 academic year.

Amy BrackelFall 2022

Professor Amy Brackel is a faculty member in the School of Humanities and Communication where she teaches Oral Communications/Research/Presentation Skills (SPC 2608). She has been teaching at Daytona State College since 2008 at the Daytona, Deltona, Deland, and New Smyrna Beach campuses. She has taught and is currently teaching this course on multiple platforms, such as F2F, Hybrid, and Online, for both 8 and 16 weeks. Through the FIC (Faculty Innovation Center) and Faculty Fellowship in Innovation, she wishes to update her course shell for all platforms to make it more invigorating and engaging for her students.

Emily MooreSpring 2023

Professor Emily Moore is a faculty member in the School of Health and Wellness where she teaches Human Nutrition (HUN1201). Since joining the Daytona State College community in Fall 2014, she has been teaching online, F2F, and hybrid modalities at the Deltona, DeLand, and New Smyrna Beach campuses. She will move to the main campus in the 2022-2023 academic year and will continue to teach in all 3 modalities. The design goals Professor Moore determined for HUN1201 are to:

  • Make it current! Revise content and major assignments to align with a new textbook edition and better address evolving topics in nutrition.
  • Make it clear! Create a definite, simplified pathway for the major assignments and course shell that can be easily navigated by students and adjunct instructors.
  • Make it captivating! Explore opportunities for engaging students in coursework and relevant supplemental material.

Be sure to check our Resources page to see the previous Faculty Fellows in Innovation, the current Faculty Fellows in Teaching and Learning, and our award winners for excellence in both hybrid and online instruction. If you have goals you believe can improve your online courses, please consider the fellowship because it is a wonderful opportunity and an honor for us to work with you.

Sincerely,
