I have over ten years of academic experience in different higher education institutions: the University of Pittsburgh, University of Central Florida (UCF), Seminole State College, and Valencia College. Over these past ten years, I've worked in an array of different areas such as research, information literacy instruction, instructional design, and training program development. During my tenure, I taught information literacy instructions face-to-face and online, co-taught semester-long courses, and have been embedded in LMS settings which helped me gain skills in designing various learning materials and program plans while working closely with departments, administration, faculty, students, and professionals.

I hold a master's degree in instructional design and technology (eLearning track) from UCF and a master's degree in library and information science (eLibrarianship) from the University of Pittsburgh. I completed my internship at the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) at UCF and designed a video series for the State University System of Florida and a Canvas Course for UCF faculty and staff. I also worked for Valencia College in the Continuing Education Department as an instructional designer. I aspire to stay informed in the field by advancing my education by attending webinars, seminars, and conferences.

When not working, I enjoy doing activities with my family. I am a mother of three human boys and two cats, Nova and Mars. I believe in giving back to our communities via volunteering for nonprofit organizations. I volunteered to teach cooking classes for a non-profit and served food to the homeless.

I am a lover of the arts, particularly painting and illustrations, so I volunteered at the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh. It was an excellent opportunity for me to learn about American artists. I have also done water marbling art (sprinkling color pigments and brushing on oily water and then transferring the pattern of colors to paper) in the past.

Updates in Falcon Online

This post will discuss 3 new updates for Falcon Online:

  1. Linking to Rubrics
  2. Controlling Assignment Annotations Tools
  3. New Quick Eval tool

Linking to Rubrics

Rubrics are a great tool for assessing assignments. Students can view rubrics within the various assessment tools both before and after you have provided feedback. However, if an assignment has an associated start date or other release condition, students can't see the rubric until the assignment becomes available. You can now provide students access to your rubrics at any time where ever the HTML editor is available. So you can link to a rubric in:

  • announcements
  • an HTML content file (course schedule, for example)
  • module and topic descriptions
  • email messages sent from within Falcon Online
  • manually created calendar event
  • anywhere else the HTML editor is used

To link to a rubric using the HTML editor (see screenshot below):

  1. Select the text you want to be the link. If you don't select any text, the name of the rubric will be added as the link.
  2. Select the Insert Quicklink icon in the toolbar
  3. On the Insert Quicklink screen select Rubrics. Note that you will need to scroll down to see Rubrics in the list.
  4. Then select a rubric from the list that appears.

Controlling Assignment Annotation Tools

In a previous update, annotation tools were added to file submission assignment types. This was on for all file submission folders, even if the tools weren't used. On the May 24th update, instructors will have the option to turn off the annotation tools on an assignment by assignment basis.

In the edit mode for an assignment, select the Properties tab and scroll to the bottom. You will see an Annotation Tools section with a checkbox for "Make annotation tools available for assessment" as in this screenshot. This is checked by default, so if you don't want the tools to show, simply uncheck the box.

Quick Eval

A new tool, Quick Eval, will also be released on the 24 May update. This is a system-wide tool, not course specific. As such it will appear as a link on the My Home page navbar as in this screenshot.

This tool will give you a list of ALL activities you need to evaluate in ALL your courses as in the screenshot below. You can organize and filter the list in various ways. To evaluate an activity, select a student's name.
