New Assignment Types and Interface Changes
Not all assignments are submitted online. Many assignments may be text-based, links to websites, paper-based submissions, in-person presentations, on-the-job demonstration of skills, etc.
Three new submission types are now available in addition to the standard file submission:
- Text submission: learners post text, image, or a link to their work in a text box within the assignment.
- On paper submission: learners submit a physical copy of their assignment directly to their instructor. No file upload is required to complete the assignment.
- Observed in person: allows instructors to observe learners as they perform tasks, such as in-class presentations, and evaluate them using Assignments. No file upload is required to complete the assignment.
Figure 1: Assignment types. Note that File Submission is the default.
On paper submissions and Observed in-person assignments include additional completion options as no submissions are made by learners in Falcon Online. These submission types can be marked as completed manually by learners, automatically on evaluation, or automatically on due date. Instructors select their completion option when creating these assignment types.
To streamline the creation and evaluation of these new types of assignments and to improve the user experience, changes have been made to the assignments user interface.
The Assignment Creation page has been reorganized. The fields on this page have been reorganized and grouped logically to improve the creation experience. The three broad groups will be as follows:
- Basic information related to assignments – Name, Instructions, Attachments
- Submission, Completion, and Categorization – Assignment type, Category and Completion status (*NEW* more details will be provided closer to the release)
- Evaluation and Feedback - Grade, Rubric, and Notification setup

Language Changes in Assignments
With the introduction these new assignment types, the language terms related to “submissions” are redundant because the Assignment tool supports use cases that do not need a submission. Therefore, the language references have been changed from “submission folder” to “assignment."
In the screenshots below you will see the impact of these changes on some of the most commonly used pages.
