In today’s evolving educational landscape, integrating AI into your teaching practices is becoming increasingly essential. While this may seem overwhelming at first, the use of AI can significantly expand your teaching capabilities and enhance student learning. Drawing from my experiences in ACUE classes, I have explored strategies for developing both AI-resistant and AI-inclusive assignments. These strategies prioritize critical thinking and prepare students for a future where AI is ubiquitous. This first blog post focuses on AI-resistant assignments.
Creating AI-resistant assignments involves designing tasks that are difficult for AI to complete, which would reduce the chances of cheating. One effective approach is to encourage your students to deliver presentations or participate in class conferences, such as short TED Talks. These activities require personal engagement and are challenging for AI to replicate. This can help with student engagement and retention of course concepts, leading to successful completion of course learning outcomes. Another strategy is to assign multimedia projects that involve creating videos or podcasts. These formats are currently beyond the capabilities of most AI tools, providing students with a creative outlet and an enjoyable learning activity.
Other ideas include having your students write about personal experiences or local events; this type of assignment can be highly effective. Writing about these personalized experiences not only supports a unique learning experience but also ensures that the content is something AI would have difficulty generating. Using social annotation tools may also allow your students to read and comment on each other’s work. This type of assignment fosters a collaborative approach in the classroom, which is difficult for AI to navigate. Another traditional method includes formal proctoring which can still be used to ensure academic integrity on individual assignments, especially in the in-person setting or for testing. As educators, it is up to us to familiarize ourselves with the new technologies, explore avenues for improving the teaching-learning process, and embrace change with an open mind. As we move forward into a new opportunity to learn and adapt ourselves as faculty, we can create a balanced approach that leverages the benefits of AI while maintaining the integrity of the learning process.
