This Year's Award Winners
It is time to highlight the achievements of two faculty members here at Daytona State College who were recently honored with awards for their exceptional contributions in online and hybrid instruction!
Professor Emily Moore became the recipient of the 2024-25 Award for Excellence in Online Instruction. She excels in cultivating a welcoming and interactive online environment, setting a high benchmark for courses conducted without in-person interaction.
In addition, professor Vincent Piazza brought an innovative approach to crafting engaging learning experiences which earned him the 2024-25 Award for Excellence in Hybrid Instruction. He created a class which transitions well between online and in-person settings.
Without further ado, let us delve into the noteworthy aspects that define the excellence of this year's winners...
2024-25 Award for Excellence in Online Instruction
Emily Moore
- Human Nutrition I HUN1201
- Emily created a 'Welcome' module to include a welcome video, a navigation video, a syllabus addendum with grading examples, assignment descriptions, a late policy, and a course schedule. Not to mention, all of Emily's course content meets accessibility standards.
- Creative Video Assignments: Students select a country that they are unfamiliar with and research its food and beverage culture. They also select a recipe and research the nutritional value of the ingredients. Students are then asked to prepare the recipe and record a video presenting the recipe and research. Students report that they learn about the food and beverage culture of a different country and that they recognize the influence of culture on health. Understanding that many students can be intimidated by cooking, we encourage them to select a recipe that is manageable for them and to make revisions as needed. Some students report that the experience has shown them how accessible cooking can be. Given that cooking allows much more control over the healthfulness of what we eat, this skill allows them to apply the nutritional strategies they have learned in the course.

Vincent Piazza
- Introduction to Humanities | HUM2020
- Vincent approached course design almost as a museum or gallery curator would; he assembled and curated a large library of digital materials (all free to access), organizing them into units and linking them to learning activities involving synthesis, critical analysis, personal reflection, and even role-playing.
Once again, congratulations to our winners of the Awards for Excellence in Instruction. We can't wait to recognize two more faculty members next year!
