On April 29, 1986, the Los Angeles Public Library caught on fire. It burned for more than seven hours. Four hundred thousand books were destroyed; another 700,000 were damaged by water. Everyone suspected arson, but the mystery of who or what exactly started the fire has never been solved to the satisfaction of most. The news didn’t spread widely, as it was totally eclipsed by the nuclear meltdown at the Chernobyl power plant on the same day.
In The Library Book, Susan Orlean tells the story of the Los Angeles Public Library from its origin, through the fire and its aftermath, up to the present day. In so doing she tells the story of all public libraries and the challenges they face, and the librarians who are committed to expanding services to the community in the face of shrinking budgets.
This is a wonderful book. If you love books, you will love this book. I highly recommend it.
